UPDATE ON OUR UCONN MEET IN JUNE
The annual Hurricane Sprints meet June 2-4 at University of Connecticut is fast approaching. Team families have individually booked about half of the available block of 50 hotel rooms at the Best Western in Mansfield, Conn.

Maura Sweeney has also booked the large conference room at that hotel so the swimmers may have a safe place to bring in lunch and/or dinner, socialize and gather for some games, etc. This room is used for a continental breakfast each morning but will be available each day for our team’s exclusive use.

If you have not yet booked a room and plan on staying over, we encourage you to book at the Best Western, so the swimmers and parents can socialize or swim at the pool on Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening after a hard day’s work.

The Best Western is about five miles from the pool. The Nathan Hale Inn is unavailable for a group our size, so it is the best alternative in the area. To reserve a room, please call the hotel at 860-423-8451 by Saturday, May 20, to ensure the group rate booked under “ANA Hurricanes Swim Team-Emma Frey.” Rooms will be released if not booked by this date and there are many local teams making this trip to attend our meet, so hotel rooms will be sparse for those waiting until the last minute.

We will produce a three-day meet program for sale because UConn does not allow us to charge admission to the meet. We would welcome any and all ads from parents/family members/kids or any businesses that have sponsored our team in the past. Rates vary from $5 for a small text-only ad to $160 for a full-page ad with graphics. Please send any ads to Lynne Bimmler at bimmler@comcast.net by Monday, May 15, or call her at 781-942-1399 to discuss (or volunteer to help coordinate the advertising).

Pre-meet volunteer jobs are listed on the ANA team website at http://www.anahurricanes.com. Click on “Schedules” and then select “Volunteer Sign-up.” The meet directors will be posting the jobs for the weekend of the meet by the end of this week, so get ready to volunteer!

Once again, we will offer “work points” for each session worked by a parent volunteer. The system worked well last year, and families were able to offset some of the costs of their YMCA and/or U.S. summer team fees by working the meet or volunteering for a pre-meet job.

Parent Board member Janet Harty is serving as meet director, and families with questions about the meet can contact Janet at ana_meet_director@yahoo.com, or 978-681-5240.

WILL YOU SWIM THE UCONN MEET?
The Hurricanes-sponsored meet at the University of Connecticut June 2-4 if for U.S. and YMCA-only swimmers.

All ANA U.S. long course-registered swimmers have been entered into the UConn meet, unless either Coach James or Coach Kathy have been notified that they are unable to attend all or a portion of this meet.

All other ANA swimmers who WANT TO COMPETE AT UCONN need to e-mail Coach James (jsweeney@mvymca.org) or Coach Kathy (r.medaglio@comcast.net) by Monday, May 8.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL TEAM BANQUET
The ANA YMCA Hurricanes annual banquet was a huge success. We had 130 swimmers, six coaches, three Y administrators and 152 parents, grandparents and siblings in attendance. There was an awesome slide show that was produced by Jim Frey that can still be purchased for $10 if you are interested. There were some technical difficulties during the banquet showing of the slide show, but it had nothing to do with the DVD. It’s a top-quality presentation! If you would like to order a DVD you can go to anadvd@freyfamily.cc and fill out an order form.

We still have several trophies and swimmer gifts to distribute, so if you did not attend the banquet please plan to pick yours up at the ANA YMCA during your practice. The coaches know where they are located or you can contact Janet Harty at pjhartyus@yahoo.com if you would like to make other arrangements.

A special thanks to all who helped to make the banquet the success it was—Emma Frey and Lisa Gray for the beautiful decorations; Laura Hunter for ordering all the team trophies; Diane Moore for ordering the swimmers’ gifts (a beautiful team towel); Jim Frey for producing the slide show; Brenda Sutherland for her generous donation of two beautiful (and delicious) cakes; Joe Alwan for being master of ceremonies; and last—but certainly not least—Janet Harty for being banquet chair.

It was a fitting way to celebrate the end of another successful season.

Those honored at the banquet included:

Most Valuable Swimmers: Jill Barclay (A girl); Nick D’Innocenzo (A boy); Kirsten Kasper (B girl); Brendan Fortin (B boy); Rachel Moore and Whitney Adrian (C girls); Bryan Walcker and Ryan Fortin (C boys); Keiley Glancy (D girl); Conor Sweeney and Ryan Harty (D boys);       Juanita Ballesteros (E girl); Justin Kerhulas and Nikolai Syssoev (E boys)

Most Improved Swimmers: Allison Alwan (A girl); John Stanley and Paul Bimmler (A boys); Michelle Walcker (B girl); Ben Morris and Paul Hunter (B boys); Meghan McGuirk (C girl); Daniel Bergey (C boy);        Jackie Russolillo and Molly Entwistle (D girls); Daniel Cunningham (D boy); Kaitlin Harty (E girl); Thomas Dalimonte (E boy)

Jane Orr Cronin Memorial Award, recognizing hard work, determination, dedication and commitment: Rachel Moore and T.C. Dodge

Sportsmanship Award, given to swimmers who exemplify the YMCA’s core values of honesty, responsibility, caring and respect: Victoria LaFortune and Nick Espaillat

Charles Q. Adams Unsung Hero Award: Colleen Hespeler and Robert Silva

Paul Getchell Award, created to honor the former longtime head coach of the Hurricanes and recognizing team commitment and loyalty: Robert Medaglio and Coach Kathy Medaglio, who started her coaching career with the Hurricanes under Coach Getchell’s mentorship

A WORD ABOUT PRACTICES
Swimmers in the Cyclones and Monsoons practice groups need to bring your fins to practice on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. If you need to purchase fins, you can do so by going to the Varsity Swim Shop on Route 28.

Also, swimmers are leaving their belongings unlocked at both ANA and Lawrence pools. Reminder: Do not bring valuables to swim practice, lock up your belongings, and when you practice at Lawrence, you may bring your bag and belongings onto the pool deck.
