Harvard University – On
Thursday night at the New England 14 and under Championships,
Lauren Conte accomplished the equivalent of an unassisted triple
play. She qualified
for three events with one swim. She dove in for her first event,
the 800 Freestyle and completed the first 200 in a personal-best
2:22.7. She continued
to lead the rest of the heat and when she turned at the 400 meter
mark, in 4:49.8 she picked up her first qualifying time for the
Eastern Zones meet.
Continuing the blistering pace, Lauren won her heat in 9:44.72
which is both a YMCA National and Eastern Zone qualifying
time.
Then, on Friday morning, Jackie Russolillo got in on the
action in the first event of the day, the 50 meter Freestyle. She dove in and completed
the one and only length of the pool in 29.22 seconds. It took a few seconds more for
her to realize that she had just punched her ticket to her first
YMCA National meet by 0.07 seconds. That swim was also an Eastern
Zone qualifying time for Jackie.
Lauren and Jackie both have the option to
swim in both meets, which take place July 27-30th at College Park, MD and
August 11-14 in Rockville, MD.
The racing continues today with the 10 and under team, and
later tonight the 11-14 crowd will be back for finals. The racing continues through
Sunday evening and the swimmers have many more chances to qualify
for future meets. Go
